The Architect Pitch- “a unique opportunity to work with an enlightened developer”

5 April, 2017

We’ve been running the Architect Pitch since September 2014. It’s the only regular forum for architects to pitch their practice to a panel of judges, including clients, and be given honest and insightful feedback in a supportive environment.

For clients, the Architect Pitch is a chance to hear from architects first-hand and put them through their paces in a relaxed and informal environment.

On April 27th, seven architects will be pitching to a panel that includes HUB’s Managing Director Steve Sanham, CEO Robert Sloss and Jo Negrini, Chief Executive of Croydon Council.

Here we ask the architects to tell us a bit about their practice and why they want to pitch. The architects are Roz Barr Architects, Draisci Studio, Feix & Merlin, Feilden Fowles, Holland Harvey Architects, Sam Jacob Studio and Ruff Architects.

Roz Barr Architects

Tell us about your practice

We are a design-based practice with a commitment to the careful crafting of architectural solutions through a process of making. We produce innovative projects from the interplay between content, context and sensitivity towards client requirements. We have worked for private, public realm, commercial and cultural sector clients in the UK and abroad. We were selected as one of last year’s ‘Emerging Practices’ published in New Architects 3 by the Architecture Foundation.

Why do you want to take part?

In the midst of a severe housing crisis, HUB has demonstrated that alternative housing and development models are tenable. This is an attractive model not least because many of us in the practice fit HUB’s target demographic – young professionals faced with an out-of-reach property market. We think that our design ethos and experience could enrich the thinking of what this future could be and compliment the ambition of HUB.

Draisci Studio.

Tell us about your practice

Established by Francesco Draisci, after working for Richard Rogers Partnership and Ron Arad Associates among others, Draisci Studio spans architecture, interiors, exhibitions and installations.

The practice thrives on this cross-fertilization of disciplines across architecture and design. Great care is invested in tuning the dialogue between the interior environment, the architecture envelope and its wider context, aimed at creating environments that act as meaningful background to people’s life.

We believe the Architect Pitch is a great opportunity for illustrating our approach to a discerning audience and we are intrigued by HUB’s innovative approach to developing residential interiors.

Feilden Fowles

Tell us about your practice

Feilden Fowles is an award-winning, London-based architecture studio. The practice is young and energetic with a dynamic, collaborative studio culture. Our ambition is to make fine buildings with integrity that are both tectonic in their expression and above all socially and environmentally responsible. We have won numerous awards including three RIBA Awards, Civic Trust and RICS Community Benefit Awards among others. We were named BD’s ‘Young Architect of the Year’ in 2016.

Why do you want to take part?

The Architect Pitch is a unique opportunity to work with an enlightened developer whose values we share about creating outstanding spaces. We believe that we offer great value to the people we work with. We have an exemplary track record for building in historically sensitive settings through working with stakeholders and the public, skills that are transferable into the world of housing design in London.

We have our fingers on the pulse of the context in which we are all working. We closely follow the changing trends in housing supply such as the Private Rented Sector and what implications this has to spatial provision and what form this might take.

The recent trend and interest in craftsmanship and materiality by consumers is something we believe remains unexplored in recent housing design. This could form the basis of how we might approach this initial project in capturing the essence of a HUB interior.

Feix & Merlin

Tell us about your practice

We are a creative design studio based in London with a wide-ranging portfolio of work across the fields of architecture, interiors and product design.

We design buildings from the inside out, rather than from the outside in- these are the bits of the building that you use every day. This is where you live, it’s where you work, and where you play. We are interested in people’s lives and experiences and how, together, we can make them better.

Why do you want to take part?

We have watched and attended almost all of the Architect Pitches and loved every minute of them. Amanda has encouraged us to take part before so we thought it’s about time we finally accepted the challenge!

This panel seems perfect for us. We know and love the work HUB do and we are also familiar with the pioneering work that’s happening in Croydon with the new Brick by Brick development company and, because Tarek grew up there, we are keen to see if we can play in part in the regeneration programme.

We are currently growing from what was originally a small practice of 2 people to what is now a rapidly growing practice of six. We feel we’re now at the point in our development to hear what people have to say about us and to start pitching for larger projects with developers and local authorities.

Holland and Harvey

Tell us about your practice

We’re an emerging RIBA Chartered Practice based in east London, established by Richard Holland and Jonathan Harvey. Our approach focuses on process and strategy to deliver aspirational projects as solutions for complex design briefs.

We spend time exploring, making and testing until an idea is distilled to its simplest, most elegant form and we have applied our process to the design and delivery of a wide range of projects across a number of sectors, creating amazing homes, hotel, retail and work spaces.

Why you want to take part

We have a talented team of designers, an established client base and a strong portfolio that we are ready to present to a wider audience. Our wonderful clients currently include GAIL’s bakery, Montcalm Hotels & Soho Housing.

We believe that the Architect Pitch would offer us the platform to engage with a broader spectrum of clients and allow us to help realise the potential of our studio. We also believe that the exposure would present opportunities to meet interesting makers, doers and designers with whom we can develop new working relationships.

Sam Jacob Studio

Tell us about your practice

Our work spans scales and disciplines from urban design through architecture, design, art and curatorial projects. The studio’s current projects include the exhibition design of Fear and Love at the Design Museum, a mixed use building in London’s Hoxton, public realm design and cultural strategy for a South London market and the design of the V&A’s new gallery in Shenzhen.

Why do you want to take part?

Our work is based on some ideas we think would be central to the discussion: architecture and design creates identity. It does this through the way that materials, references, form and so on create a language. Understanding how that language resonates with users is key to the success of a project especially when that project is housing.

Home is where personal identity is expressed publicly, where taste and lifestyle combine to create spaces for living. Making those spaces exciting and relevant to today’s demands means taking a strategic look at what modern life is. Or rather, what it could be.

This is the challenge we see in the design of contemporary living spaces – for architects and even more for developers.

Why do you want to take part?

To find the perfect client is difficult. Architecture is a service industry where the needs and desires of your client, key stakeholders and the wider public needs to be addressed.

The skill of a good architect is to provide something better – something innovative and creative. Building on our studio ethos, we are seeking out creative and like-minded clients, be this at the domestic scale, medium or large masterplan level. Passion and enthusiasm from all is what’s needed to create great places, communities and buildings.
