Pre-register for next small sites conference – September 2018
12 June, 2018
Following the sell-out success of the Archiboo/Rare Space half-day conference on developing small sites, the next conference in September will return to some of the same topics including finding land, buying land and case studies. We will also be adding a session on ‘alternative routes to development’ covering community land trusts, custom build, social investment and crowdsourcing.
We will be inviting the GLA back to talk about its Small Sites initiative and how it intends to increase the supply of small sites so they can play a greater role in helping to deliver the capital’s housing needs.
Architects are often best placed to spot the potential of awkward, compact sites – a point emphasised by Colm Lacey of Croydon’s Brick by Brick at our conference in April.
He said: “Architects are pretty much the only people who can develop these sites. Berkeley Homes aren’t going to do it. Barratts aren’t going to do it so don’t stop and don’t be afraid of going at it. There will be challenges along the way but it’s not necessarily a challenge you won’t be able to solve”.
The number of small sites coming forward has halved in the last decade and London has lost almost a third of all small and medium-sized homebuilders operating in the capital, according to the GLA.
